Since 1978, the Holiday Sunshine Fund has distributed more than $1.7 million to non-profit organizations and agencies in the Greenville, SC market. The Holiday Sunshine Fund was formed by The Greenville News and is operated by a board of volunteer Greenville News employees. Fundraising efforts launch on Thanksgiving Day each year and conclude on December 31. Funds are typically distributed shortly after being received during December and January.

In 2006, local NBC affiliate WYFF joined The Greenville News in efforts to promote and support growth of the Fund. Each year a telephone fund-raising drive is held during an evening news broadcast on WYFF.
